December 2008 – We Became Scentsy Consultants We Couldn’t Afford to Join

The recession didn’t just slow things down – it wiped Wendy’s seven-year legal recruiting firm off the map. Shawn was employed, but her income was what kept the family afloat. Savings gone. Debt piling up. Collectors calling every single day.

That December, Wendy was running a holiday store at the kids’ elementary school as PTA President. She’d booked a Scentsy vendor named Katie to be part of it. Neither of them had any idea what was coming.

Every time Wendy looked up from running the event, Shawn was at Katie’s booth. He’d fallen in love with the products, the online model, and the idea of building a team. The problem was they couldn’t pay the light bill.

They told Katie they’d join after the new year. She didn’t wait. She paid for the starter kit herself.

December 18th, 2008. Shawn and Wendy Robinson became Scentsy consultants.

They Drove to the Library Every Day

The heat wasn’t the only thing off. The internet was too.

So every day, Shawn and Wendy drove to the public library to use the wifi. While working a full-time job, Shawn built a website, a blog, and an online presence from a library table. Wendy was working a second direct sales job she didn’t love, trying to find something that gave her flexibility to be there for their young kids.

They heated the kids’ bath water on the stove. They told them the heater part was coming from Europe.

They did that for months.

By October 2009, Something Had Shifted

Shawn had built a team of 56 people and was drowning trying to manage them alongside his job. He came to Wendy and asked her to take over.

She wasn’t sure. Her whole career had been in corporate. Wax and warmers didn’t exactly feel like a next chapter.

She said yes anyway.

Within months she found her recruiting passion again. The team grew fast. That first year they earned their first all-expense paid incentive trip, started earning several thousand a month, and started putting the finances back together.

On June 1st, 2012, Shawn retired from his job at 42. He became a stay-at-home dad who volunteered at school, served as art docent, and made it to every single event.

The Debt Got Paid. The Collectors Stopped Calling.

Hawaii. Greece. The Dominican Republic. A Caribbean cruise. Disney World. Earned trips, not bought ones.

Christmas stopped being something they dreaded. The debt that once felt impossible was gone. But the part that meant the most wasn’t the trips or the income – it was watching people on their team do the same thing. First international flights. First planes. Spouses retiring. Debt disappearing. People building something that moved with their lives instead of against them.

They ran their entire Scentsy business from hotel rooms, Airbnbs, cafes, and condos in countries they couldn’t have pointed to on a map ten years earlier. 40 countries. 4 continents. A pregnancy along the way. A team that grew to nearly 8,000 consultants worldwide.

The same business they built from a library table during the recession – built while the heat was off and the collectors were calling – traveled the world with them.

A New Chapter

They’ve recently settled back in the States. Their youngest wanted school and some permanency for a while. New chapter, new roots, same business.
